VA outpatient clinic in Plano, Texas expands, adds female care provider to staff
The Plano Veterans Affairs Outpatient Clinic in Texas can now see more patients, thanks to a recent expansion.
The clinic opened in 2016 in a 10,000 square-foot facility, according to a VA blog post. It has now added nearly 10,000 square feet of clinical space and a seventh patient aligned care team to keep up with the growing veteran population in the area.
Years later, VA still hasn’t set maximum wait time for community care referrals
The expansion is to Air Force veteran Shawn Yonley’s liking. In order to visit the Dallas VA Medical Center, he would have to block out an entire day to travel from his home in Plano.
“I like that I don’t have to travel so far now to get VA services,” he said in the post. “It’s right here in Plano. That’s better than getting on the train and taking a 90-minute ride to get to the VA hospital in South Dallas.”
Yonley was also the first veteran to be seen by Plano’s new PACT team.
The military mental health system falls short of troops’ needs, watchdog report shows
The Plano VA outpatient clinic currently serves more than 7,000 veterans and performs a wide range of healthcare services including primary care, nursing, clinical pharmacy, blood draws, dietician, social work services, mental health, and telehealth services.
The blog notes that the number of female veterans is growing across VA North Texas. The new PACT includes a female provider who will focus on taking care of women veterans.
“We are going to expand our female veteran care and outreach,” said Amy Oommen, nurse manager, Plano VA Outpatient Clinic. “We have one female provider on staff and are adding another one to focus on taking care of our female veterans.
“All of our providers take care of female veterans, but when you have a female taking care of female veterans, I think it makes them feel more comfortable.”
The expansion allows VA North Texas to serve an additional 1,300 veterans.
